Hospice Day Care exists to enable patients to have a professionally supported day out in a warm friendly environment with the opportunity to meet other people, giving both the patient and their family time for themselves. The Centres are run by a qualified Day Care Leader, assisted by an experienced palliative care nurse. The Hospice doctor will attend the sessions from time to time.
Various activities are organised, lunch is provided and transport to and from the day centres will be arranged where necessary. Complementary therapies may be offered following referral and assessment by a team member.
Patients are referred to Day Care by the health professionals providing their care – usually Macmillan or District Nurses. Hospice at Home West Cumbria runs Hospice Day Care at two locations each week at present:
