Hospice Nurse 1.jpgNursing care and support is offered to adults with cancer or other advanced illness following an assessment, which is normally undertaken by a Macmillan Nurse or the Hospice Nurse Team Leader.  Care is given to patients in their own homes, which can include Residential Care Homes, Nursing Homes and Community Hospitals.

Nurses stay all night or for agreed hours during the day, and they work alongside family doctors and district nurses. Home nursing can be provided in crisis situations, when end of life is near, or for periods of respite care to lessen the ongoing stress of caring.  It can help enable patients to remain in their own homes if that is where they want to be.

We utilise the skills of Registered General Nurses and of Health Care Assistants.  If administration of medication is required during the shift then a trained nurse will be allocated.  Health Care Assistants are not allowed to assess for the administration of medication but can assist a patient to access their prescribed medication.

Care is reviewed on a regular basis, and will continue if appropriate although there may be times when nursing care is no longer necessary.  Care will only be withdrawn following a full assessment and after discussion with the patient and his/her carer.
