Hospice at Home West Cumbria
H
ospice at Home West Cumbria was established in 1987.  It exists to provide the best possible palliative care to terminally ill patients, to give help and support to their carers/loved ones, and to make its services available to everybody in West Cumbria who needs them.

The heart of our operation is our home nursing service, giving skilled nursing support on a one-to-one basis to any adult with a terminal illness in their own home.  This provides respite care for patients and their families; it enables terminally ill patients to remain at home and dying patients to be discharged from hospital to their own homes.   We are one of the very few providers of home nursing for the terminally ill, and were one of the two hospices that pioneered this service in 1987.

Additionally we provide Hospice Support in three community locations, Hospice Day Care in two places, a Lymphoedema Service, and a Bereavement Support Service.  Patients can get Complementary Therapy treatment at the Hospice Support sessions and at hospice Day Care or in their own homes.  All services are provided free. The NHS provides sufficient funding to cover about 1/3 of our costs.  The rest, £7,500 a week, has to be raised locally through voluntary donations, fundraising and legacies.
